On May 26, 2026, our friend, father, mentor, and lifelong sailor John Campbell was rescued from the Pacific Ocean after a terrifying ordeal at sea.
John was sailing solo aboard his beloved vessel, April Alice, on the return leg of a voyage from Hawaii to Vancouver Island when he encountered severe weather approximately 1,600 kilometres off the coast of Oregon.
In high winds and rough seas, April Alice suffered catastrophic damage. The vessel was capsized and demasted, leaving John alone and adrift in the open Pacific. During the storm, he also sustained an injury to his left shoulder.
After getting the SOS message, his family and friends responded quickly by calling the coast guard. With the tremendous efforts from the US Coast Guard, especially Joseph S., and coordinates and communication from his Garmin inreach and their team, the planning of a rescue operation began. Winds were over 50 knots and waves were over 30’ so nothing could be done until the next day. After 20 hrs the storm began letting up slightly and commercial activity began operating within some distance. A freighter and a cruise ship responded and spent seven hours navigating through difficult conditions to reach him. Thanks to the skill, determination, and courage of the captain and crew, John was safely brought aboard.
While we are beyond grateful that John survived, the rescue came at a cost. April Alice—the vessel that carried him across thousands of miles of open ocean—was left adrift at sea.
For John, this loss is especially devastating because April Alice was more than a sailboat; it was his home. As his primary residence, the vessel represented not only years of dedication, preparation, and adventure, but also the place where he lived and built his life. In a matter of hours, John lost both his cherished boat and the home he called his own.
Many know John as more than an accomplished sailor. He is a loving father and grandfather, a respected member of the Vancouver Island Sailing community, and a beloved swim coach who has spent decades helping young athletes build confidence, resilience, and a love of the water. His influence has reached countless families, swimmers, and friends over the years.
Today, we’re asking our community to rally around John as he begins the journey of rebuilding after this loss. Funds raised will help offset costs associated with the loss of April Alice, replacement of essential belongings, gear and equipment, a next vessel to call home, and the various unexpected expenses that follow an event of this magnitude.
John has spent much of his life supporting, teaching, and encouraging others. Now it’s our turn to support him.
Most importantly, we are thankful that he is home, safe, and surrounded by those who love him.
Any contribution, no matter the amount, is deeply appreciated. If you’re unable to donate, please consider sharing John’s story as he embarks on an adventure to rebuild.
Thank you for helping support John Campbell and honouring the remarkable spirit of April Alice.
