To our Social Media Family and friends, as you all know, my brother, Joe LaPietra, was diagnosed with ALS 6 years ago. This form of ALS is a slow progressing variant. Regardless of the type of ALS that you are diagnosed with, there is little to no help for families that do not qualify for Medicaid assistant.
After applications and recommendations from his neuro team at Strong Hospital, Joe was approved to be a patient at the Healy Clinic in Boston, MA that strictly treats ALS patients. His treatment is ongoing and requires frequent trips to Boston resulting in uncovered expenses including hotel, food, gas, etc.
In addition to the above expenses, ALS trial drugs are not covered by insurance; and they are costly - $800 to $1000 a month on top of other medications and medical equipment needed to help Joe’s quality of life. Three years of travel and out of pocket expenses drain a family financially and emotionally.
My sister-In-Law Ellyn, and my nieces Emily, Samantha and Olivia, are grateful for everyone’s support. They are so strong and give everything they have; their lives are defined by Joe’s illness and his care. They need our help.
Our biggest challenge has become transporting Joe to various events. Dr’s Appt, Blood Work, Family Events, or just for a drive is a painful task. His limbs and muscles are extremely weak and transfer in and out of chairs/vehicles causes him significant pain. Joe has become a two to three person lift and it is taking its toll on everyone involved.
Due to the family’s current financial situation, we are asking for donations to purchase a handicapped accessible van. A vehicle of this type will make it easier to transport Joe safely around the Rochester area and make it possible for him to keep his appts at the Healy Clinic in Boston. If any monies are left over from the purchase of a van, it will go towards construction of a roll in shower for Joe.
We are so humbled by the support that you have shown Joe and his Family during his battle with ALS. While it’s never easy asking for financial assistance; we ultimately have no choice.
Joe has been a constant in so many people’s lives. We ask for your continued support, prayers, and love. God Bless you all.
Thank you so much, Gary LaPietra
