Welcome Baby Maizey & a Challenging First Week

We’re so happy to share that Maizey Rosalind Henderson arrived safely on October 4th at 2:54 AM, weighing 10 lbs, 9 oz, and measuring 21 ¾ inches long. Her delivery went smoothly, but the days that followed brought unexpected and difficult challenges for Jessica, Maizey, and Jordan.

In Jessica’s final trimester, she was being closely monitored for preeclampsia. Her blood pressure during delivery remained stable, though on the higher side. After birth, Maizey required a brief stay in the NICU to stabilize her blood sugar and prevent hypoglycemia.

Meanwhile, Jessica experienced a spinal headache caused by a difficult epidural placement (requiring 3 attempts) and needed a blood patch procedure for pain relief. Thankfully, both Jessica and Maizey were discharged on October 6th, with plans for continued monitoring—Jessica for headaches and blood pressure, and Maizey for rising bilirubin levels.

However, just two days later, on October 8th, Jessica was readmitted to the hospital with preeclampsia and began treatment with blood pressure medications and IV magnesium sulfate. While Maizey was initially able to stay with Jess, the decision was made for her to return home with Jordan so Jessica could focus on recovery—and I stayed with Jess at the hospital.

Then, another unexpected event: While Jordan was on his way back to pick up Maizey from the hospital, he was involved in a hit-and-run accident while stopped at a red light. Thankfully, he wasn’t seriously injured. The driver who hit him was later found—but uninsured. The car, however, sustained extensive damage.

Despite the stress and exhaustion, Jordan has done an incredible job caring for Maizey on his own, and Jessica was finally able to return home on October 10th. Maizey’s bilirubin levels are now trending down, and both parents are doing their best to adjust to this new (and very demanding) chapter of life.

While this time should be filled with joy and bonding, the medical complications, unexpected hospitalization, and car accident have placed an overwhelming financial burden on Jessica and Jordan—especially with reduced wages, medical costs, and now unexpected auto repair expenses.

Jess and Jordan have been together since high school and have been married for 8 years. They are looking forward to welcoming their baby girl in the next few weeks and are so excited about this next phase of life.

Jessica is a caring and dedicated pediatric physical therapist who has spent her career helping children with disabilities overcome challenges and reach their full potential.

As Jessica enters the final month of her pregnancy, her doctor has placed her on medical leave to ensure both her health and the health of the baby. Because she works for a very small company, her short-term disability, maternity leave, and PTO are limited.

Jessica would love to be able to stay home with her newborn for 8 weeks after delivery. However, due to being placed on medical leave prior to delivery, a large portion of her maternity leave will now be unpaid. This has made the weeks surrounding her leave financially stressful for both Jessica and Jordan as they prepare for their baby's arrival.

Through it all, they remain strong, hopeful, and grateful. They are so excited to welcome their little one into a loving home. Jessica looks forward to returning to the work she loves, caring for children and families, once she has recovered from childbirth and has had sufficient time to bond with her new baby.
