Jermaine Hudson was convicted of an armed robbery that never happened in 2,000. He was sentenced to 99 years at hard labor. Two of the jurors in his case were not convinced of his guilt and voted to acquit, but because of an 1898 Jim Crow Law designed to silence Black jurors, their votes did not count. Jermaine spent 22 years at Angola prison away from his daughters, his wife and the rest of his family.

In 2021, Bobby Gumpright, the man who had falsely accused Jermaine, came forward and admitted he had made the whole thing up. Afraid to tell his father he had spent his paycheck on drugs, Bobby had invented an armed robbery and identified Jermaine as the man who robbed him.

Jermaine was released from prison in 2021. Since then, Jermaine and Bobby have embarked on an extraordinary journey of healing, accountability and friendship. The two men are fighting for people who continue to be incarcerated with non-unanimous juries all over Louisiana.
