My name is Janos. I came to the United States alone because I believed I could build a safe, honest life through hard work. I’ve done exactly that: I work, I keep my head down, and I try to do everything the right way.

But I learned the hard way how easy it is to be taken advantage of when you’re new, vulnerable, and don’t fully understand the system.

When I arrived, I trusted a company that promised to “take care of everything.” Instead, I was misled, financially harmed, and pushed into a confusing legal situation that I did not fully understand at the time. I ended up paying money for things that should have been handled differently, and I’ve been trying to untangle the damage ever since.

Right now, I have a pending immigration case and I’m legally working in the U.S. — but having a case doesn’t automatically mean you’re safe. One mistake or wrong advice can change your entire future, and I can’t afford to gamble on that again.

I’m also preparing to pursue a T visa because I believe what happened to me fits exploitation and fraud, and the process is complicated and document-heavy.
