On Tuesday, November 11th, my cousin Janell went to the ER at Community Hospital in Munster, IN, after experiencing continued shortness of breath and coughing up small amounts of blood. Her primary care physician initially thought it was related to pneumonia she had in September, but further tests revealed something much more serious. A CAT scan showed masses on her lungs and liver, and after a series of biopsies, Janell was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer that has metastasized to her liver, adrenal gland, and pelvic bone. This diagnosis came as a huge shock, especially since Janell has never been a nicotine smoker and, to our knowledge, has not been exposed to carcinogens.

Janell is a vibrant, healthy 36-year-old whose courageous fight has just begun. As a recently laid-off Social Worker who has spent her career caring for others, she's now asking for care herself. Janell is facing a long road of aggressive chemotherapy treatments and ongoing doctor’s visits, which doctors think could be up to 2 years of chemotherapy ahead.
