Janelle Gilchrist Dance Troupe is thrilled to announce an exciting collaboration with Horizon Ensemble for an upcoming performance of 'Different Trains' by Steve Reich at the Church of the Covenant on Newbury Street, Boston MA on Saturday April 18th, 2026. As a company, we are passionate about bringing innovative dance to our community and supporting the talented artists who make it all possible. For this project, our dancers are working closely with the musicians of Horizon Ensemble to create a unique and moving experience for everyone who attends.
'Different Trains' is a powerful and evocative piece by composer Steve Reich. It draws on his childhood memories of train journeys across America during World War II, contrasting them with the very different trains that carried Jewish people to concentration camps in Europe at the same time. The music weaves together recorded speech, train sounds, and live instruments to create a deeply emotional reflection on history, memory, and the impact of war. Our choreography aims to honor the spirit of the piece and bring its themes to life through movement.
This project is self-funded, but our commitment to our dancers and our audience remains strong. We believe that artists deserve to be paid fairly for their work, and we want to ensure that our company can continue to put on high-quality shows. This year, I'd like to raise money that will go directly toward paying our professional dancers, covering the costs of costumes, travel expenses, administrative needs, studio space, and production costs. Every contribution helps us keep our vision alive and supports the creative spirit of our community.
We invite you to join us for this special performance, which is free and open to the public. Your support—whether through a donation or by attending the show—means the world to us. Together, we can make this collaboration with Horizon Ensemble a reality and continue to share the joy of dance with everyone. Thank you for believing in our mission and helping us keep the arts thriving!
