This morning, our family received the kind of phone call that changes everything.
Our brother, Isaiah, is in stable but critical condition after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a serious accident in Toronto.
Right now, we're taking things one hour at a time, hoping we'll soon get to the point where we can take things one day at a time. We still don't know all the details of what happened, and right now those details aren't what matter most. Our focus is on Isaiah, on being there for him, and on giving him every opportunity to heal.
Some of our family is already in Toronto, while others are making arrangements to get there in the coming days. Family and close friends are gathering around Isaiah because that's what we do. We know the importance of coming together in moments like this, pooling our love, our energy, and our resources to support someone we care about so deeply.
For decades, Isaiah has worked as a freelance photographer in Toronto. His camera has taken him everywhere, from hip-hop shows and music festivals to film events, celebrity photography, and countless other creative projects. Like many artists, he's built a life doing what he loves. Photography has been his passion, an important part of how he's supported himself, and the way he's connected with the world for most of his adult life.
Isaiah is the second oldest of six kids. Like any big family, we've shared plenty of laughs, disagreements, teasing, and sometimes bickering over the years. But underneath it all has always been love. Right now, that's what's holding us together.
Anyone who knows Isaiah knows how hard-working, unwavering, determined, and yes, stubborn, he is. He has always met life's challenges head-on, and we believe those same qualities will help carry him through the long road ahead. We know this won't be easy, but if anyone has the stubbornness to keep fighting, it's Isaiah.
The truth is, none of us knows what the hours, days, weeks, or months ahead will bring. Recovery from a traumatic brain injury is often a long and uncertain journey.
More than 20 years ago, I was in a devastating car accident that changed the course of my life forever. I became a wheelchair user, and I know firsthand how quickly life can change, and how long and uncertain the road to recovery can be.
I also remember the incredible kindness of the people who stepped in when I needed them most. They eased burdens I couldn't carry on my own and gave me one less thing to worry about while I focused on healing. It made more of a difference than I can ever put into words.
Today, it's my brother who needs that same support. My hope is that, together, we can give Isaiah that same gift: one less thing to worry about, so he can put all of his energy into healing.
We're creating this fundraiser to help ease some of the financial pressure that comes with a life-changing injury. Whether it's living expenses, rehabilitation, transportation, or the many unexpected costs that come with recovery, our hope is to give Isaiah one less thing to worry about so he can focus on healing.
Whether you're able to donate, share this page, or simply hold Isaiah and our family in your heart, in whatever way is meaningful to you, every act of kindness means more than we can express. We are so grateful for your love, your support, and the encouragement you've already begun to show our family.
We'll continue to share updates as we learn more and as Isaiah's journey unfolds.
Thank you for standing with Isaiah and with all of us during this incredibly difficult time. It means more than you'll ever know.
With gratitude,
Morning Star
On behalf of the family
