My name is Irene Djai, a Cameroonian school teacher now living in Maryland and a proud member of We Are CASA. I fled my home in Anglophone Cameroon due to a violent armed conflict that displaced my family and separated me from my loved ones. The pain of that separation—and the uncertainty of their safety—remains with me every day. Despite everything, I remain hopeful and determined to rebuild my life.
In August 2025, I lost my work authorization following the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Cameroon. Since then, I have been unable to work legally, even though I am ready and eager to contribute. I applied for asylum in October 2025 and have completed my interview. My case is currently pending. As I approach the 180-day mark, I am now eligible to apply for my work permit—a critical step toward regaining my independence. Unfortunately, I cannot afford the application fees and legal support required to complete this process.
Today, I am not asking for a handout—I am asking for a bridge. Your support will help me apply for my work authorization, access legal assistance, and stay stable while I await the ability to work again. Every contribution, no matter the amount, brings me closer to stability, dignity, and hope. If you are unable to give, please consider sharing my story. Thank you for standing with me during this difficult time. Your kindness reminds me that I am not alone.
