Help Inside Justice Project Expand Free Legal and Advocacy Support Across Canada
Inside Justice Project is a federally incorporated non-profit and a recognized Civil Society Organization under the Law Society of Ontario. We provide free legal information, advocacy, navigation, and practical support to incarcerated people, people returning to the community, and their families across Canada.
Many of the people who contact us have nowhere else to turn. They may be trying to understand a parole decision, challenge unfair correctional treatment, maintain contact with their children, obtain records, prepare a grievance or application, or access community support before release. Families are often left trying to navigate complex correctional and legal systems on their own.
Our work includes:
- Parole, conditional release, and revocation support
- Institutional grievances, complaints, and legal applications
- Human-rights, privacy, and administrative-law matters
- Advocacy involving visits, telephone access, transfers, security classifications, and release planning
- Helping incarcerated people obtain and understand records, disclosure, policies, and decisions
- Supporting families when communication is interrupted or urgent intervention is required
- Referrals and reintegration planning involving housing, education, employment, wellness, and community services
- Research and advocacy concerning systemic barriers affecting Black, Indigenous, Muslim, racialized, transgender, and other marginalized people in custody
In our early stages, we have already assisted incarcerated people and families in Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, and other parts of Canada. We have intervened in urgent parole, correctional, legal, family-contact, and release-planning matters for people who often had no other meaningful support.
We are also developing new community-based projects, including:
- A youth-focused initiative supporting young people involved in Ontario’s detention and justice systems
- A healing and reintegration program for women returning to the community after serving federal sentences in Manitoba
- Expanded intake, legal-navigation, family-support, and reintegration services for people held in provincial and federal institutions
- Educational resources that help incarcerated people and families understand their rights and participate meaningfully in decisions affecting them
This work is currently being built from the ground up. We have not yet secured ongoing federal or provincial funding, and much of the work has been completed through unpaid labour and personal resources. The demand is growing, but without sustainable funding, so is the pressure on our limited capacity.
Your donation will help us:
- Maintain reliable telephone and collect-call access for incarcerated clients
- Pay for printing, postage, records, legal materials, and document production
- Maintain secure technology, data storage, and case-management systems
- Support in-person meetings, institutional visits, hearings, and court-related travel when necessary
- Expand services into more provincial institutions and communities
- Develop our youth, women’s reintegration, family-support, and educational programs
- Build the administrative and professional infrastructure needed to serve more people responsibly
- Keep a dependable communication lifeline available to incarcerated people and their families
Examples of what donations can support:
- $20 — Collect calls and urgent client communication
- $50 — Printing, postage, and preparation of a legal or advocacy package
- $100 — Secure technology, records management, and case-file expenses
- $250 — Core weekly operating costs, including calls, outreach, materials, and client support
- $500 or more — Program development, travel, professional services, and expanded regional outreach
Inside Justice Project believes that accountability, dignity, family connection, and access to justice do not end when someone is sentenced. People in custody and their families still deserve accurate information, fair processes, meaningful support, and a realistic opportunity to rebuild their lives.
Every donation helps us respond to another call, prepare another application, support another family, and reach someone who might otherwise be left completely alone.
Please donate and share our campaign. Together, we can build a stronger and more accessible Inside Justice Project.
