Hello friends and family!
I hope you are doing well!
As you may or may not know, a little more than two years ago I moved all the way across the country to attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. As I got to know the city, I realized I wanted to do something to give back to the community I was going to be a part of for four years. So, I got involved in the Providence chapter of Food Not Bombs. Food Not Bombs is an international organization with chapters all across the globe, and its basic premise is that we should be feeding people instead of spending money on war. Every Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., we give out free meals to people experiencing homelessness and anyone who needs one. We also serve breakfast every Thursday from 9:30 to 11:30 am.
My work with Food Not Bombs meant so much to me that I started a club at Brown to support the Providence chapter. As a club, we have worked to recover food from dining halls and university events that would have been thrown away otherwise. We’ve also held fundraisers for other FNB chapters, including the FNB chapter in Lebanon which has worked to provide meals to the recently displaced. Though we’ve done a lot as a club, I’m proudest of the end-of-year move-out drive we held last semester, where we put boxes in every dorm building for people to contribute any snacks they didn’t want to take with them as they were moving out for the year. As a result, we recovered almost fifty pounds of food!
Another important part of my identity is being a distance runner, a hobby I’ve managed to maintain in between the hectic schedule of college life. This November, I’ll be running the Colt State Park Half Marathon, and I want to use this event as an opportunity to raise money for Food Not Bombs Providence, as they are a cause I care deeply about. Specifically, as we transition into the winter months, we need cups for hot drinks and a hot coffee/tea dispenser. Our chapter’s supply of utensils, paper plates, and to-go containers is also running low. Your donation would go directly toward buying essential supplies for our weekly meal serves.
If you'd like to sponsor me to complete this race, I'd humbly request your donation (of any amount) to Food Not Bombs. If you are interested in donating, we have a Venmo (@brown-fnb) and this GoFundme.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
With gratitude,
Indigo
