Support Immigrant Parents Rebuild in Korea

After decades of building a home in the U.S., my beloved parents have made the difficult choice to move back to our homeland in Korea. Their decision is informed by the dehumanizing state violence targeting immigrant communities here in LA, as well as their inability to make a living after my dad lost his car and primary income source as a gig driver. As low-income working class immigrants, they’ve always experienced barriers to sustaining their livelihood, but survival no longer feels tenable under these exacerbating circumstances.

My parents are elders nearly in their 70’s who have worked and paid taxes for decades, but they can't collect Social Security retirement benefits due to being undocumented. Their savings are nearly depleted after months of underemployment, forcing them to depart without a safety net. Packing just their clothing and a few memorabilia, they will leave behind most belongings and the apartment we migrated to in 1999. The money raised in this fundraiser will cover critical relocation costs such as flights and their first few months of essential living expenses.

While this moment is challenging, I’m held by loved ones who have reached out in support. I am hopeful we can show up to this opportunity to channel resources for my parents and immigrant communities targeted by this administration’s escalating violence. Collectivized mutual aid by communities all over the world teaches us, time and time again, we keep us safe.
