"Ibrahim" and his very young family of four are Rohingyan Muslim refugees from Myanmar. After years of struggling and literal torture, they arrived in the United States (Central Maryland) on January 16, 2025; 8 days later they were told there were no services or money available to them due to the abrupt halt of the refugee program. His response to the case manager when he heard this was, "Are we going to die?"
Over the last several months, with the help of volunteers and enrollment in a separate state-level program, things are slowly improving for Ibrahim and his young family. In early May, they were able to overcome a major hurdle - Ibrahim finally received his Social Security card (thank you, bureaucracy) and can now seek employment. He is working with an Employment Coordinator to that end.(Technically he had employment authorization documents, but employers wanted the Social Security card in hand as well.) However, he no longer has any guaranteed rental assistance.
This fund is intended to provide Ibrahim and his family with full rent ($1,500) for the month of June; 2/3 rent ($1,000) for the month of July; and 1/3 rent ($500) for the month of August. This will help his family work towards self-sufficiency.
Any contribution that you can make will help us towards this goal!
