Support Ian's Eagle Scout Project: Revive Historic Cemetery
Donation protected
Ian Golding is raising approximately $1400 so that he and his team of volunteers can carry out his Eagle Scout project at the Gooding-Smeaton Family Cemetery on March 1st, 2nd, and 8th. He and his team of volunteers will be looking to remove invasive species, trash, leaves, and brush from the cemetery to bring it back to its former glory. This fundraiser will be going towards the rental of a dumpster, tools such as grass sickles and rakes, and food and drinks for the volunteers.
The site where Ian’s Eagle Project will take place is the Gooding-Smeaton Family Cemetery, which is home to the remains of the Gooding family. The Gooding family ran a tavern in northern Virginia and were frequent helpers in the Underground Railroad, helping slaves obtain freedom. The tavern, which was adjacent to the family cemetery, was very important to local history, as it was a common place for gatherings and events. Today, there is a historical marker that stands where the tavern used to be located.
All funds not utilized for this project will be donated to the project beneficiary, the Fairfax County Cemetery Preservation Association.
