On Monday, October 28, 2019, the workers of El Real in Montrose showed up to work to see the restaurant shuttered, a note on the door, and someone changing the locks. Around 40 workers are immediately out of a job.
To make things worse, Bryan Caswell, the owner of both El Real in Montrose and Reef in Midtown, has not been paying his workers. Workers are saying checks have bounced, tips are being withheld, and several paychecks have gone unpaid. One worker says she is owed up to $1700 in tips alone! Bryan Caswell has broken several promises to pay the El Real Workers, which is why they are organizing.
This is the end of the month, and rent and bills are due this week. At least one worker is pregnant, many have children, and many live paycheck to paycheck. Workers at El Real need anything you can give to help as they demand that Bryan Caswell pay them. Please help the workers survive this week: donate anything you can, share this fundraiser, and tell the story of how Bryan Caswell doesn't pay his workers.
More details: Houston DSA is hosting this fundraiser after talking to leaders of their workplace. All donations will be going to the ~40 El Real workers in a way that they determine. No donations here will be kept by Houston DSA.
Houston DSA is the local chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, with over 600 members in the Houston area. We are a membership based, democratically run organization. We fight for more democracy — in our politics, workplaces, and communities.
