Help Bring My Mother, Hawa Hunt, Home
Hello, my name is Alicia Hunt, and I’m reaching out for help during an incredibly difficult time. On December 22, 2024, my mother, Hawa Hunt—who holds dual citizenship in Canada and Sierra Leone and has lived in Canada for nearly 20 years— was unexpectedly arrested on live television while appearing on the House of Stars reality show in Freetown, Sierra Leone. She now faces charges under the Cyber Bullying Act, stemming from a social media post she shared over a year ago. In this video, she shares her opinion on the actions of the President and First Lady of Sierra Leone. Although she has fully cooperated with the authorities, she has remained in detention, and my family is deeply concerned about her well-being.
Why my mom needs your help:
Challenging Jail Conditions
My mom is currently in a facility where resources are limited. She faces overcrowded conditions, inadequate nutrition, and minimal access to healthcare. In the short time she has been detained, she has visibly lost weight and is in need of proper care and support.
High Legal Costs
We’ve secured a lawyer to represent my mother and ensure her rights are respected. However, legal fees are substantial, and our resources are running low. Your contribution will help us keep up with ongoing legal expenses so we can continue to advocate for her fair treatment and swift release.
Travel and Logistics
Once she is permitted to return, we need to cover transportation costs to bring her back home to Canada. Traveling internationally under these circumstances can be expensive, but reuniting our family is our top priority.
Emotional and Physical Recovery
My mother has undergone a stressful and frightening ordeal. She will require therapy and medical attention to address both the physical toll and the emotional trauma she’s experienced.
Rebuilding her Life
Upon returning, my mom will need to get back on her feet. This includes everything from housing assistance to everyday essentials so she can transition smoothly into normal life again.
How your donation helps:
Ongoing Legal Fees: Assisting in covering the high costs of the lawyer we’ve already hired.
Transportation & Logistics: Securing the means for her to safely travel home when she’s able to.
Therapy & Medical Care: Providing her with the services she needs to recover from this traumatic experience.
Day-to-Day Essentials: Helping her get back on her feet once she’s free.
This has been an overwhelming journey for my mother and for our entire family. Your generosity and support will bring her one step closer to being home, safe, and on the road to recovery.
Thank you for reading my mother’s story. Whether you donate, share this campaign, or keep her in your thoughts, your kindness means more than words can express. We remain hopeful that with your help, she’ll soon be home with us.
Clear Allocation of Funds: All funds raised will be used for the reasons listed above. We will provide detailed updates on how the funds are being utilized.
Refund Policy: If any donor feels uncomfortable with the management of funds, we will offer a clear refund policy. Your trust and support are invaluable to us, and we want to ensure you feel confident in your contribution.
Transparency is our priority, and we want to keep you informed every step of the way.
