Seventy-five-year-old Haj Youssef used to live in Beit Hanoun, in the heart of besieged Gaza. Surrounded by his large family of over fifty members, including children and grandchildren, and despite suffering from a heart condition, he has always been a symbol of resilience and strength.

Israel’s latest war on Gaza has been the most devastating Palestinians have ever faced. One dark night last October, shells rained down on Beit Hanoun, instantly turning homes into rubble. In moments, Haj Youssef lost twenty of his relatives, most of them women and children, transforming a place alive with voices, bustle, and the sounds of children playing into a tragic and desolate mass grave. Haj Youssef sustained a severe shoulder fracture, rendering him unable to move his arms, which compounded the suffering caused by his heart condition.

His children and grandchildren scattered across the Gaza Strip, each seeking a safe haven. They have been forced to move numerous times to escape the slaughter caused by the deadly array of Israeli bombs. Their journeys in search of safety are filled with fear and tears as they move from the north to the south of the strip and back again, carrying with them memories of loss and pain.

Currently, Haj Youssef has settled with about 8 family members in a small tent in Deir al-Balah. The tent barely protects them from the winter cold and the summer heat and lacks basic necessities. When it rains, water floods the tent; in winter, cold winds penetrate their frail bodies; and now the sweltering summer heat burns their skin. They lack sufficient food and water. Each day feels like an eternity of suffering.

Beside Haj Youssef, who is immobilized due to his injury and heart disease, sits his sick daughter silently enduring the harsh conditions. He tries to comfort his young grandchildren by telling them stories of resilience and hope, attempting to plant seeds of strength in their young hearts even though he knows reality is much harsher.

Within this tent, family members band together to manage their affairs. The young help the old and mothers try to cook whatever food they can find. Life in the tent is a lesson in solidarity and cooperation. Despite the harshness, the love between each member grows stronger, giving them the strength to face their desperate hardships.

We cannot imagine the conditions in Deir al-Balah where Haj Youssef and his family are living. They desperately need your support. They need food, clean water, shelter, and medical treatment. Additionally, they need support for their future when the borders open and the situation improves. The funds will help them rebuild their lives, ensuring they have the means to secure a stable and hopeful future, including the possibility of traveling abroad for medical treatment.
