Support Haitian Mothers Facing Deportation and in Crisis

Donation protected
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” - MLK

The fear of detention and deportation has created a climate of terror for expectant Haitian mothers in the Dominican Republic. Today, pregnant and postpartum women—some with newborns in arms—are being deported from the Dominican Republic back to Haiti, often with little warning, straight from hospitals and days or sometimes hours after labor and delivery. These situations are taking place in the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

We are hosting an emergency fundraiser in response to this crisis in order to support the following:
  • Basic baby, sanitary, and medical supplies for postpartum women—and their babies—that are deported days after labor and delivery with literally nothing (no diapers, sanitary pads, clothes, etc.)
  • Transportation costs for women to unite with family (when possible) once they are left at the border by immigration
  • Psycho-social support for women who are dealing with the trauma of deportation and economic support to help with reintegration
  • Education training for pregnant women and their families on emergency signs during labor (many women are currently attempting unassisted home births in fear of hospitals & clinics which lead to deportation)
  • Prenatal and postnatal home visit consultation for women who are avoiding hospitals and clinics
  • Economic support to help women integrate and adjust to life in Haiti when applicable.

Your support will directly aid two trusted organizations on the ground who are working together to support Haitian women across the island: GARR (Groupe d’Appui aux Rapatriés et Réfugiés) and Parto Humanizado.

GARR offers critical support to deported women and children arriving in Haiti, helping them with immediate needs such as clothing, diapers, medical check-ups, and transportation money to reunite with family when possible (in many cases reunification is not possible because gangs control so many routes in Haiti).

Parto Humanizado is working in the Dominican Republic to ensure that all women receive compassionate, culturally competent, and safe maternal care in the Dominican Republic regardless of immigration status, nationality, or social status. Together, they aim to provide shelter, medical support, and trauma-informed care to pregnant and postpartum women.

This is more than charity—this is solidarity and working with viable solutions during this critical time. The island of Hispaniola (made up of Haiti and the Dominican Republic) has a long, complex history, but today we have a chance to take a stance—rooted in justice, dignity, and care for all.

Every donation is a statement:
  • All mothers deserve to give birth safely, to recover in peace, and to raise their children with hope—and Dominican and Haitian organizations are willing to take collective action to make that happen.
