My dearest friend Hailey, Santos, and their young child James suffered a tragic and devastating loss in the early morning hours on Tuesday, May 19th. A fast-moving fire tore through their home on Karm Way in North Highlands, leaving them with absolutely nothing. They lost their home, their clothes, their belongings, and every comfort dear to them.

It was Hailey's quick instincts that saved them. Waking up to the smoke at 4:00 AM, she immediately jumped into action, waking up Santos and getting her family moving. Because of her, they made it out with their lives, though the escape was harrowing. Hailey and Santos suffered 2nd-degree burns and have a long journey of physical and emotional healing ahead of them. In an act of pure love and bravery, Santos shielded their son, James, ensuring he made it out completely unscathed.

Tragically, because the fire spread so rapidly, there was no time to save everything they loved. Amidst the chaos of saving their son, they suffered the unimaginable heartbreak of losing their three beloved pets to the fire. The grief of losing these sweet animals, who were a massive part of their family, has made this tragedy even harder to bear.

While we are infinitely grateful that Hailey, Santos, and James are still here with us, they are now starting completely from scratch. Displaced, recovering from painful injuries, and dealing with the immense trauma and heartbreak of this loss, they need our community more than ever.

As Hailey’s dear friend, I am putting this together to help take some of the immediate financial burden off their shoulders so they can focus on healing.
