This is Guillermo, master baker at Walla Walla's Maple Counter Cafe, community organizer, and beloved uncle, friend and confidant to many.
Since The Maple Counter Cafe opened in 2011, Guillermo has been the wizard behind all of your favorite pancakes, quiche, biscuits and sauces. He is behind the scenes, but he plays a role in every plate that goes out to Maple Counter customers. Maple Counter owners Kory and Rachel Nagler describe him as "warm hearted, kind, devoted, meticulous, intelligent and full of laughter."
Guillermo puts a lot of love and caring into his job at Maple Counter, but he puts even more into giving back to his community. He is an organizer with the volunteer-led Walla Walla Immigrant Rights Coalition and the only member to date who has served on every single committee. Guillermo is a humble leader, a keen listener and a deeply generous person. He readily volunteers for any task that needs to be done. Guillermo is also an avid reader and an enthusiastic salsa dancer and soccer player.
Unfortunately, Guillermo was recently hospitalized due to an emergency abdominal surgery. His recovery took longer than anticipated. After 2 long weeks at Providence, he returned home to recuperate. He has been laid off from his job since Gov. Inslee shut down indoor dining in November, and like many in the restaurant industry, he is uninsured. Guillermo will need a follow-up surgery in four months, and until then, he will need help to pay for medical supplies, doctor's visits, rent and utilities, and everyday living expenses until he can get back on his feet.
Guillermo has done so much for our community in the last 10+ years, and we have a unique opportunity to empower and support him during his time of need. Please donate what you can.
