SOLIDARITY OVER CHARITY: 23 West / 40 Oak Mutual Aid Fund
Hello all! We are the 23 West/40 Oak Tenants' Association and we've been working tirelessly for the past few years to build a better community right here in our Greenpoint backyard by improving conditions in our building, working with local politicians to highlight inequities and by advocating for ourselves and neighbors as tenants of an affordable housing building.
As many of us prepare for the holiday season, members of our community are experiencing heightened financial strain: including recent SNAP benefit cuts, government shutdown furloughs, and the general financial pressure that comes with the end of the year. When systems fall short, we step up for each other. That’s what strong neighborhoods do.
This fund is one way we put our values into practice: solidarity over charity.
It’s not about “helping” others from a distance, it’s about standing together and making sure everyone in our building community can access what they need.
What This Fund Is For
This fund provides direct support to residents of the West and Oak Street areas of Greenpoint, Brooklyn who request help.
Needs may include:
- Groceries
- Medical bills
- Child or family expenses
- Holiday needs for families/children
- Other urgent costs
How It Works
- Neighbors like you donate and our mutual aid fund is established.
- Residents complete a short request form.
- Personal info is removed for confidentiality.
- Funds are distributed as: Grocery gift cards. Amazon/equivalent gift cards. Other requested support
Our aim: support as many neighbors as possible! This mutual aid fund drive is scheduled to end at the end of 2025 or when available funds run out. However, a successful drive would potentially lead to a year-round mutual aid fund to help neighbors in crisis at any time!
