Inmiddels ben ik al weer een maand in Ghana en zet ik mij volledig in voor het Global Star Health Centre. Ik ben namelijk gevraagd om samen met een enthousiast team van zorgprofessionals een gezondheidscentrum, het Global Star Health Centre, te (her)openen, een kans die ik niet aan mij voorbij wilde laten gaan. Wat vooraf al een enorme uitdaging leek, blijkt in realiteit nog veel groter te zijn dan ik dacht en daarvoor ben ik jullie hulp nodig!
Global Star Health Centre bevindt zich in North Legon, een wijk gelegen in het noorden van Accra, de hoofdstad in Ghana. Global star is een kleinschalig gezondheidscentrum waar we primaire zorg verlenen aan de mensen uit de wijk en omstreken. We functioneren voornamelijk als polikliniek maar indien nodig kunnen we patiënten een dagbehandeling aanbieden. Wanneer er meer zorg nodig is verwijzen wij door naar het ziekenhuis in de buurt. Iedere maandag maken de community health nurses gebruik van ons centrum om daar het consultatiebureau voor onze buurt te doen.
Naast dat we basiszorg verlenen aan alle mensen in de omgeving willen we ons als gezondheidscentrum gaan focussen op de zorg aan ouderen. Ook in Ghana neemt de vergrijzing toe en zijn er nog veel ontwikkelingsmogelijkheden op het gebied van ouderenzorg. Een aantal belangrijke aandachtspunten waar wij als gezondheidscentrum iets mee willen doen zijn o.a. de zorg omtrent verhoogde bloeddruk, diabetes en andere (chronische) ziektebeelden die voorkomen bij ouderen, het weinig gebruik maken van de gezondheidsdiensten en sociaal isolement onder ouderen. Waar we in Nederland goede ouderzorg kunnen leveren door o.a. thuiszorg en verpleeghuizen, komt dit in Ghana nog maar weinig voor. Hier willen wij dus het verschil in gaan maken!
Het team van Global Star bestaat nu uit twee Physician Assistants (PA), een verloskundige, twee verpleegkundigen, twee laboranten, een schoonmaakster en ik zelf.
Helaas is het gebouw niet goed onderhouden en niet volledig afgemaakt door de vorige eigenaar. Dit is o.a. te zien door de vervuilde muren, de verf die bijna van de muren afvalt, meubilair en medische apparatuur die vervangen moet worden, elektriciteit die voor een gedeelte kapot is en nog geen watervoorziening in het gebouw. Zolang dit niet aangepakt wordt kan Global Star Health Center niet officieel geregistreerd worden als gezondheidscentrum en kunnen wij dus momenteel niet de juiste zorg bieden die de mensen uit de omgeving verdienen/ nodig hebben. Helaas lukt het mij niet alleen om het gezondheidscentrum te renoveren en daarom heb ik jullie hulp nodig.
Met een bedrag van €5000,- lukt het ons om Global Star Health Centre op te renoveren.

I have been in Ghana for a month now and I have been fully committed to the Global Star Health Centre since my arrival. I was requested upon by a team of young and enthusiastic health care professionals to re-open the Global Star Health Centre, an opportunity I did not want to let go. This seemed like a huge challenge, but appears to be much bigger in reality than I thought. At this point I decided to reach out for support. I need your help!
Global Star Health Centre is located in North Legon, a neighbourhood located in the north of Accra, the capital in Ghana. Global Star is a small-scale health centre with a focus on providing primary health care services to the locals living within the North Legon community. We mainly function as an outpatient clinic. However, on special cases we detain for day treatment. Cases that require more than a day care are referred immediately to nearby specialist hospitals for adequate care. Every Monday we host the Community Health Nurses in our facility. These health professionals are charged by the Health Service to offer post-natal care for new mothers in the neighbourhood.
In addition to providing basic care to all people in the area, we as a health centre want to focus on care for the elderly. The aging population keeps rising in Ghana and there are still many opportunities for development in the field of elderly care. Some of the services that we as a health centre want to focus on includes; check and care for high blood pressure, diabetes and other (chronic) illnesses, the limited use of health services and social isolation that are prevalent amongst the elderly. Whereas we can provide good elderly care in the Netherlands such as home care and nursing homes, this is hardly the case in Ghana. So we are poised on making a difference.
The Global Star team currently is made up of two Physician Assistants (PA), one midwife, two nurses, two lab technicians, a cleaner and myself.
Unfortunately, the hospital building is not really in good state. The facility currently isn’t patient friendly as the previous owners did little with regards to maintenance and repairs. This is evidenced by the dirty walls, wall paints falling off due to rising-dampness, bad state furniture and outmoded medical equipment that needs to be replaced. The electricity is not regular as most of the cables and sockets are also worn-out and there is no tap water supply to the facility.
These conditions among others are some of the contributing factors that have prevented Global Star Health Centre to officially be registered as a licensed health centre. Consequently, we are unable to currently offer the right care and services needed by the people in the community.
Unfortunately, I do not have the capacity to renovate Global Star Health Centre. It is for this reason that I write to you for your support. With an amount of € 5000, I am certain that we will be able to perform the renovation works at Global Star Health Centre.
