A New Hope for Gareth: Help Us Start Over for His Health

Hello, my name is Rafaela Beatriz Guilarte Zuñiga, I’m 26 years old, originally from Cuba, and the proud mother of Gareth Martin, a 20-month-old baby who is the light of my life.

I came to the United States 4 years ago in search of a better future. What I never imagined was facing the greatest challenge of my life as a mother. At just 2 months old, my son began showing symptoms that led us to countless tests and medical consultations. He was eventually given a devastating diagnosis: Bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria, a rare neurological condition that causes uncontrollable seizures, developmental delays, motor difficulties, and progressive brain degeneration.

In addition, Gareth was also diagnosed with dysgenesis of the corpus callosum, a brain malformation that affects communication between the two hemispheres of the brain. Despite everything, no abnormalities were detected during my pregnancy, and all genetic tests—both Gareth’s and ours as parents—have come back negative. We live day by day with many questions, uncertainty, and hope for medical advances that may one day bring answers.

We currently live in Corpus Christi, Texas, where Gareth has been seen by several neurologists. However, the specialists have told us there is nothing more they can do, and they have recommended that we seek care at a medical center with more experience in this type of condition.

After much prayer, thought, and an entire month in the hospital with Gareth due to pneumonia, we have made a firm decision: we will move to Orlando, Florida, where there are hospitals recognized for their advanced pediatric neurology care.

This change comes with great challenges. My son needs constant 24-hour care, which means I cannot work, and my husband is currently the sole provider for our family. Moving means starting over completely: no support network, no job yet, and many expenses ahead.

That is why I humbly turn to you. Your help will allow us to cover the costs of moving, housing, medical care, and basic living expenses while my husband searches for a new job and we work to get back on our feet.

It has not been easy to write these words. I’ve kept this journey private for a long time, trusting that this season of hardship is only temporary. But I hold on to a promise from God—that this diagnosis will be transformed for good. And I believe Him.

Una esperanza para Gareth: Ayúdanos a comenzar de nuevo por su salud

Hola, mi nombre es Rafaela Beatriz Guilarte Zuñiga, tengo 26 años, soy originaria de Cuba y mamá de Gareth Martin, un bebé de 20 meses que es la razón de mi vida.

Llegué a Estados Unidos hace 4 años buscando un futuro mejor. Lo que no imaginé fue enfrentarme a la mayor prueba como madre: a los 2 meses de nacido, mi hijo comenzó a presentar síntomas que nos llevaron a múltiples exámenes y consultas médicas. Finalmente, recibió un diagnóstico devastador: Polimicrogiria bilateral perisilviana, una condición neurológica poco común que causa convulsiones incontrolables, retraso en el desarrollo, dificultades motoras y degeneración progresiva del cerebro.

Además, a Gareth también se le diagnosticó disgenesia del cuerpo calloso, una malformación cerebral que afecta la comunicación entre los hemisferios del cerebro. A pesar de todo esto, durante el embarazo no se detectó ninguna anomalía, y tanto las pruebas genéticas de Gareth como las nuestras como padres han salido negativas. Vivimos día a día con muchas dudas, angustias y rezando por avances médicos que nos den esperanza.

Actualmente vivimos en Corpus Christi, Texas, donde mi hijo ha sido atendido por varios neurólogos. Sin embargo, los mismos especialistas nos han dicho que ya no hay más que puedan hacer, y nos recomendaron buscar atención en un centro médico con mayor experiencia en este tipo de condiciones.

Después de mucho orar, pensar y pasar un mes completo con mi bebé hospitalizado por neumonía, hemos tomado una decisión definitiva: nos mudaremos a Orlando, Florida, donde hay hospitales reconocidos por su alto nivel en neurología pediátrica avanzada.

Este cambio conlleva grandes desafíos. Mi hijo necesita cuidados constantes las 24 horas del día, por lo que no puedo trabajar, y mi esposo es actualmente el único sostén del hogar. Mudarnos implica empezar desde cero: sin red de apoyo cercana, sin empleo aún, y con muchos gastos por delante.

Por eso, recurro con humildad a ti. Tu ayuda nos permitirá cubrir los gastos de mudanza, vivienda, atención médica y manutención básica mientras mi esposo consigue un nuevo empleo y logramos estabilizarnos.

No ha sido fácil escribir estas palabras. Siempre he llevado este proceso con discreción, confiando en que esta etapa es temporal. Pero tengo una palabra de Dios, una promesa que me sostiene: que este diagnóstico se modificará para bien. Y yo le creo.
