The Rockaway Art Room wants to achieve two goals:

1) Let's have free art classes for everyone in our neighborhood!

2) Let's also create jobs by making sure the artists who teach are paid fairly for their time and expertise.

Like you all, I love our special little peninsula, and I'm constantly inspired by what the people here build. But one thing I couldn't find were art classes.

I asked around and found that others would be into having art classes here, too. So I thought, heck, we can do it—build a place where anyone can walk in, make something, and feel welcome.

This fundraiser will support a 3-month pilot program, offering three free art classes each week. The funds raised will go directly toward paying our teaching artists a fair wage, purchasing art supplies, covering administrative costs, and supporting outreach efforts to make sure everyone in the community knows they’re invited. We’re also planning for taxes and other essentials, so the program can run smoothly and sustainably. Every dollar helps us keep classes free and ensures that artists are respected for their expertise and creativity.

When will these take place? That depends on when the funding comes in! As soon as we are fully funded, we can start the program. (I'll be sending occasional updates via email--you can join the mailing list here .)
