Friends, Peace, and Sanctuary Journal is the first Arabic newspaper created in Philadelphia in over 100 years. Through essays, news, recipes, poetry, art, and more FPS Journal is creating community for Arabic speakers in Philadelphia and beyond. The newspaper is being distributed for free. Its contributors come to Philadelphia from across the Arab world, and the paper is also seeking contributors of all backgrounds who wish to reach an Arab audience.
Co-creator Nora Elmarzouky writes, "We know the more people know each other, the less scared we are of each other. We hope that an Arabic-language newspaper reminds each other that we have a community here in Philadelphia, and reminds others that we are members of the wider Philadelphia community. To build sanctuary for all, we all must feel valued, significant, and have space to live in peace and the ability to connect as friends."
Your contribution will help FPS Journal grow and reach more people by allowing the journal to pay contributors for their stories, and pay translators so that the next edition can be published completely in both Arabic and English. It will also help cover the costs of printing, and allow FPS to scale up distribution.
The newspaper grows out of a two-year arts collaboration also called Friends, Peace, and Sanctuary, that brought together artists to document, question, and create together through their experiences of displacement and refuge, and art's ability to heal and create empathy. It is co-founded and edited by Nora Elmarzouky and Yaroub Al-Obeidi.
If you can't give monetarily, FPS is also looking for help with distributing the paper and is always seeking contributors to share their stories, their art, and their community.
