Our hearts are shattered as we share the news of the tragic passing of Jacob Padilla.

On the evening of April 21st, Jacob was doing something routine—walking to the corner store near his home to pick up drinks for his workday the next morning. In a senseless moment, he was the victim of a hit-and-run. Jacob was rushed to University Hospitals in downtown Cleveland with severe head injuries, where he fought bravely, but ultimately passed away surrounded by the love of his family.

Jacob was only 24 years old. He was a son, a brother, a cousin, an uncle and most importantly, a devoted father to a young son who now has to grow up without him.

The pain of this loss is compounded by an unimaginable coincidence: almost exactly two years ago to this date, Jacob’s mother lost her older son, Cesar. No mother should ever have to bury one child, let alone two in such a short span of time.

While dealing with this profound grief, the family is also facing significant physical and financial strain. Jacob’s father is currently undergoing dialysis for kidney failure, and Jacob’s mother is his sole caretaker. Between the medical needs of her husband and this tragic event, she needs her community now more than ever.
