Support for the Holmes Children

On Saturday, January 29, 2022, the Holmes family suffered the sudden and devastating loss of their devoted father and husband, Daniel "DJ" Holmes. That day, DJ was doing something he always did -- spending quality time with his daughter and waiting to watch his son's basketball team compete in a big game. Tragically, he suffered a massive heart attack and never made it out of the gym that day. DJ has left behind his two young children, daughter Ajaah and son Daniel ("DD"), and his wife of 24 years, Anya "Starr" Holmes. Without him, their lives are forever changed and they will need ongoing support from their family, friends, and community.

 

Many have asked how they can help the Holmes with their financial needs. Although the community support so far has been tremendous (especially from DD's school and AAU basketball team who have covered some major expenses), the family will continue to have unmet needs for months and years to come. I've spoken with Starr to find out what we, as the larger community, can do to offer support. While she is deeply grateful for the outpouring of help the family has already received, she agrees that more support is needed and welcome. I now have her permission to create this GoFundMe page to assist her in meeting her children's needs throughout the next year and beyond.

 

Without the additional income from DJ, and no resources already in place, Starr is suddenly left as the sole parent. For the next several months, as the family adjusts to their loss, she will have to miss days from her hourly retail job to attend to the children. Needless to say,  their day-to-day lives will be challenging for quite a while. The children need help with expenses to cover grief counseling and therapy, clothing/school uniforms, activities, etc. And, of course, the family will need ongoing financial support for household bills and everyday expenses.
