As many of you know, we are parents to two beautiful girls — Marley, our lively toddler, and Sunnie, our brave little fighter. Recently, our world changed when, at 4 days old, Sunnie was diagnosed with an incredibly rare immune condition called SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency).

SCID means Sunnie was born without a functioning immune system, leaving her unable to fight off everyday germs. Even a minor illness could be life threatening for her. Because this condition is so rare, there is very limited funding or support available for families going through it, which makes the journey even more challenging.

Sunnie faces a long period as an inpatient in hospital for treatment over the coming months, after which she will require multiple hospital visits per week, and will need to remain in strict isolation for up to a year, or longer, while her new immune system slowly grows and becomes stronger.

This has placed our family in a heartbreaking and logistically impossible position. One of us must stay with Sunnie in the hospital, and the other must be home caring for Marley. With our family split between two places and both children needing constant support, neither of us is able to work right now.

And even once we’re all finally home under one roof again, the strict isolation requirements mean returning to work still won’t be possible. Sunnie’s safety depends on keeping her environment completely controlled, which means no exposure risks, no childcare options, and no way for us to safely have jobs outside the home during her recovery.

Our focus has to remain entirely on keeping both our girls safe, comforted, and supported through this long road ahead.
