A close friend recently took on the responsibility of caring for seven children, ages 4 to 18, after their mother was detained by ICE and began the process of deportation. The situation changed rapidly—she gained custody of the older children just two weeks ago, and the younger ones joined her only yesterday when no other family members were approved by CPS. Now, all seven kids are living together in a three-bedroom, two-bath home, and the need for stability and support is urgent.

Despite the challenges, the kids remain optimistic and are adjusting as best they can. They love going on evening bike rides together, and my friend and her partner are working closely with the schools to keep everyone on track academically. While CPS is helping to establish food stamps and other assistance, there will be a one- to two-month wait before those resources are available. In the meantime, the family needs help to provide basic necessities—twin mattresses and bunk bed frames so everyone has a place to sleep, bedding, clothing, school supplies, and temporary food assistance to ensure the kids are well cared for.
