Help My Mom Access Life-Changing Treatment & Support Our Family
Hi everyone,
I’m writing this with a heavy heart, but I feel I have no other options.
For the past four years, my mom has been living with severe medication-resistant anxiety and depression that has completely taken over her life. For over 20 years, the medications worked, but now she has tried everything doctors have recommended — countless medications, therapy, ketamine treatments, and even Electroconvulsive Therapy — yet nothing has brought her lasting relief. Instead of improving, her condition has continued to worsen.
Today, my mom is largely homebound. She is fully dependent on my dad, rarely leaves the house, and her anxiety has made it impossible for her to drive or work consistently. Watching someone who was once vibrant, capable, and deeply caring struggle like this has been heartbreaking for our entire family.
My dad has been her constant caregiver, provider, and emotional anchor through all of this. He immigrated to the United States from Bolivia over 30 years ago in search of a better life. He has always worked hard and lived humbly, and while life here has given him more opportunity than he had before, he has never truly known financial security.
He works full-time and also runs a small lawn care business on the side, doing everything he can to keep them afloat. They don’t live in a big or fancy house. They don’t take vacations or spend money on luxuries. Their lives are simple — built around working hard, paying the bills, and moving forward one day at a time. But with my mom’s health declining and expenses continuing to pile up, he is no longer able to manage everything on his own.
Over the last year, my mom has barely been able to work at all. In trying so many treatment options, some have left her with lasting negative side effects, particularly affecting her memory and cognitive inhibitions. These cognitive challenges have made it even more difficult for her to continue the work she has relied on for the past several years — medical interpreting and insurance file review work — jobs that require intense focus, accuracy, and mental stamina. This has further limited her ability to earn income and added to the emotional toll she carries every day.
We are now trying to pursue TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) treatment — something that many people with treatment-resistant depression and anxiety have found real relief from. Unfortunately, my mom’s insurance has repeatedly denied coverage, and the out-of-pocket cost is simply not something my parents can afford. This truly feels like a last real option to help her reclaim some quality of life.
In addition to mental health care, my mom also needs extensive dental work that she has been forced to postpone for years due to cost. My dad also has his own medical needs, including ongoing medication and a necessary surgery, which add further strain to an already overwhelming situation.
On top of everything else, my parents are facing critical home repairs that can no longer be delayed — including a new roof, a chimney rebuild, and the removal of a dangerous tree near their home. These are not upgrades or cosmetic improvements, but essential repairs needed to keep their home safe and livable.
The constant pressure of medical bills, declining health, and mounting expenses has become too much for either of them to handle alone and they are talking about selling one of their cars to do what they can to keep their house.
What makes this especially difficult is knowing the kind of people my parents are. My mom has spent her entire life helping others. Every job she’s had has been in service of helping people — work that is meaningful, but not financially rewarding. Even when my parents have had very little themselves, they have always found ways to give to others, including donating to countless crowdfunding campaigns because that is simply who they are. They will give a room to someone in need, volunteer to help the homeless, help drive someone to the airport they hardly know. There's honestly not enough time or room on this page to mention every selfless and kind thing they have done to help others out.
I help my parents financially wherever I can, but the reality is that what they are facing right now is more than I am able to handle alone.
How the funds will be used:
All in all I am hoping to raise $60,000 to help cover the following essential needs:
-TMS treatment: $15,000
-Roof & chimney repairs: $15,000
-Dental care: $20,000
-Misc. medical needs (medications and surgery for my dad): $10,000
Every dollar raised will go directly toward helping my parents regain stability, safety, and a chance at healing.
Any donation — no matter the size — would mean more than I can express. If you’re unable to give, even sharing this page helps immensely.
Thank you for taking the time to read my parents’ story and for any support you’re able to offer. Your kindness, compassion, and generosity give me hope that healing and stability are still possible.
With love and gratitude,
Rebecca Vega
