Support Asian Trekking Sherpas and Staff Families

The Corona virus global pandemic has brought the world to its knees and it's clear that we are all suffering its impacts on our work, our businesses, our livelihoods and our future. But as in any circumstance, there are those who are impacted far harder than the rest of us. Nepal, which doesn't have the same social safety nets as in richer countries is a much harder place to weather a storm of such epic proportions.

Sherpas of Nepal, like those of my company Asian Trekking, are amongst those hardest hit of all. Depending almost entirely on the income from the spring climbing season to make ends meet for the rest of the year, this was supposed to be a time when they would "put money under their wives' pillows" as we like to jokingly say. Being the sole bread winner in the household, this money would pay the house rent, pay to put food on the table, pay for their parents medical expenses and their childrens' school fees. Since all climbing expeditions have been cancelled due to the pandemic, the Sherpas are now facing a long and hard year ahead until the next spring climbing season in 2021.

To meet the very basics of their daily expenses, Asian Trekking currently has 55 Sherpas and expedition cooks on a monthly retainer of approx $40 per month to tide them over between climbing seasons, when they make their real income. This retainer is just a drop in the bucket but with all business cancelled for the foreseeable future, it's the best I can personally do during these difficult time.

With immense gratitude and appreciation to Alan Arnette's initiative of Virtual Everest 2020 campaign to help the Sherpa, I have set up this fundraiser page so that I can raise more money to support my Sherpas. ALL the funds raised here will go directly to my hardworking staff.

As a small token of thanks for your contribution, we will print your name on a banner that will go to the Summit of Everest next Season. For those who pledge $100 or more, I will personally mail you a small keepsake, that we have collected during one of our Everest clean ups. For those of you who don't know, my Sherpas and I have been cleaning Mt. Everest each season since 2008 and till date have collected over 21,000 kilograms. It would be a pleasure for me to gift you something from Everest collected by the very same Sherpas you are supporting.

Thank you, Thuji Che,
