I'm not proud of having to ask for help, but I have a wife and three kids and was placed in a wheelchair due to someone else's bad decision. My house is a 1958 wood frame home that is not setup for a wheelchair, the doorframes need to be replaced or widen
On August 18th, 2023, I had gone to town for a part to complete a small wood project, and as I was going through the green light, a 17-year-old turned into and over my motorcycle. I was airlifted with a broken back, paralyzed, and missing my left leg after amputation, five broken ribs, a plate on my broken collarbone, and road rash. I've had five surgeries just within weeks of the accident. The teenager driving had been on the phone during the accident and afterward didn't even call 911. Later, we found out that she had been driving as a restricted driver under their insurance policy, so no insurance, and I only had liability.
We tried every lawyer around, but nobody would mess with it being that there was no insurance and no assets to be had, so no money. My house was built in the '50s, so it's not exactly wheelchair friendly. I haven't been in my own kitchen since the wreck because there's no room to move, along with my kids' room. All of my doors are barely wide enough for me, and in my bathroom, I can't reach the sink, so I brush my teeth using cups my wife brings me and shower once a week because I can't get next to the tub to transfer over, but I use baby wipes during the week to stay clean.
My dad built a ramp for me, and a friend from work painted my house since I just had a company replace all the siding just before and after the accident, which drained what little I saved before the accident and from my dismemberment insurance. I've had little help other than my church, and my medical bills got most of that. Now I've lost my job because of my condition, which is progressively getting worse. Luckily, I was approved for long-term disability, so I at least have something coming in to help my wife and kids.
I've been with my wife for 25 years and have three good kids. My oldest son, 17, has just found a job and wants to help, but I'm getting him to save it. I don't have the reach that the Internet has, and I can't stand the thought of not being able to fend for myself and my family, but the time has come. Thank you, and I appreciate you for your time.
