Just 45 minutes into the New Year, on January 1st, my family’s life changed.

I received a message from my little sister telling me that my family: my mom, her spouse, my 14-year-old sister, and my 1-year-old baby brother, had been in a serious car accident.

I live in Florida. They live in Wisconsin. There was nothing I could do from here except wait for updates and pray.

They were in the middle of moving into a new home after being given until New Year’s Day to leave the place they had been staying. While transporting their belongings, another driver crossed into oncoming traffic in an attempt to pass the car in front of him and slammed into them.

The injuries were devastating.

• My 14-year-old sister suffered fractured toes and a severely sprained ankle.

• My 1-year-old baby brother was hospitalized for several days with facial bruising, a cut on his nose, and was monitored for potential internal injuries.

• My mother, who already had serious damage to her right arm and was awaiting a specialist appointment and possible surgery, now has severe injuries to her left hand as well. The tip of her left thumb was completely severed and surgically reattached. She currently has extremely limited use of both hands.

• Her spouse suffered a fractured pelvis and a dislocated hip, leaving him unable to work or move independently for the foreseeable future.

Both adults are now physically unable to work. They are facing months of recovery, medical treatment, and rehabilitation.

To make matters worse, the driver responsible for the crash has been avoiding contact with my mom’s attorney. All they are trying to determine is whether he even has insurance to cover the destruction of my mother’s vehicle, the only car they had. Right now, my family has no transportation, no income, mounting medical bills, and no clear answers.

They were already in the middle of a move. Now they are facing this nightmare on top of it.

This fundraiser is to help my family survive the next few months: medical expenses, transportation, rent, basic living costs, and the support they desperately need while they heal.
