Michelle Chiaro, my dear friend of nearly 40 years, passed away unexpectedly on June 15th. She was a single mom of 4 with the most beautiful spirit, infectious smile and unforgettable laugh.

Michelle was diagnosed with breast cancer in April and immediately began chemotherapy. Her prognosis was good, and she was expected to recover fully. Unfortunately, due to a weakened immune system, she developed an infection that quickly led to sepsis, causing her organs to shut down. On Monday night, we were talking/laughing about our upcoming 50th birthday girl's trip to Mexico. I got a call on Tuesday informing me that she was taken to the hospital and placed on a ventilator when her family could not wake her. By Wednesday afternoon, she was gone.

As an ICU nurse for 26 years and the sole provider for her four children, Michelle spent her life caring for others and putting everyone else's needs before hers. Her positive attitude and wonderful smile brought joy to the lives of everyone who encountered her. We have truly lost one of the brightest lights.

Michelle's sister Melissa is in the process of taking over guardianship of her children and moving them to California to live with Melissa and her family. They need our help. There is substantial expense involved with moving across the country, making renovations so the children can have their own space and planning for their futures.
