Hello -
My amazing husband died racing the Baja 1000 in 2016, his name was Mark Luhtala, LuhTech Motorsports Spec Trophy Truck #288.
Mark had a head-on collision that left him without a left leg, awaiting medical attention for some 6 hours (9 hours total to get him to a US hospital); where he was for 3 days before suffering a heart attack which ended his life.
We have 2 girls; Eva was 2 at the time and does not remember her daddy. Janie was 12 and remembers everything! This has been such a nightmare, one we never awake from!
Score International & BF Goodrich have done nothing to help my girls or I for their future. Being a single/widowed mom to 2 grieving girls is the hardest thing imaginable. I honestly thought they would take care of things, but they told me they would never want to set a president for future deaths at their events. This shocked me as it was on their watch and without regard for timely emergency medical response.
This could be any racer out there, anyone's family and it could happen to anyone, we're living proof of this. The last 8 years I have done my best, but I am so tired and am struggling financially to stay afloat.
I have college, vehicles, weddings, insurance, grief counseling/camp for my girls and I am not one to ever ask for help, but it's just overwhelming at times, and it's all on me! Their dad would have loved to help with these things, but he's gone!
To everyone out there racing, please be safe. Have your own medics & backup plan for emergency removal from Mexico is possible. DO NOT RELY on the race owners/promoters for help or with their insurance. I assure you; you must have your OWN PLAN....
Stay safe & kick up some dust~
With Love~

PS - At the Base of Mike's Sky Ranch, there are 2 wooden crosses, please stop by & pay your respects. This would mean so much to me!
