Funeral Support For Ms. Afiah Bey & Son

Donation protected
UPDATE: On January 28th, we lost the matriarch of our community in South Dallas, Ms. Afiah Bey, to heart complications. Her brother has come to me to ask for your support in helping to raise funds for her funeral. I am hopeful that community will take care of Ms. Afiah's her remaining family members like her husband, Malik Shakur, in the same way Ms. Afiah took care of us through the giving of her talents and brilliance through cultural arts, storytelling for our youth at our community centers and public libraries, the drum circles on her porch, and her sharing of the rich history of our people. We mourn her departure, but rejoice in the belief that her soul is now reunited with both of her sons that she lost to gun violence. Please support a grieving family who has lost so much in the matter of one month.

On the night of December 28th, the second day of Kwanzaa, on which we celebrate the second principle of Kujichagulia: Self-Determination, dear and beloved son, Issac Moseke Bey, was taken from us too soon at the age of 32 when he was shot in South Dallas and died in the hospital later that night.

I am a neighbor to Ms. Afiah Bey and have befriended her family since moving to South Dallas a few years ago. Last night, I heard multiple gunshots, ran to my backroom, and a few minutes later peeked through my living room window to see my neighbor's son Issac on the sidewalk bleeding out. I am creating this gofundme after hearing the devastating news of Issac's passing this morning while also understanding the weight of this loss and it's impact on my neighbor's wellbeing, livelihood, and finances. This family has already lost thousands of dollars in wages due to the economic crisis unraveled by the pandemic and to now have to bury their son amidst all of this is something I want to provide some relief in as a fellow neighbor. It is our duty to support and love one another. It is also important for me to note that Issac is the second son they've lost to senseless gun violence in the Dallas area, following the murder of his older brother over 13 years ago. Ms. Afiah has no remaining children and is mourning with her loving husband.

This is an unexpected tragedy for Ms. Afiah, her husband, and our entire block in South Dallas. Ms. Afiah and her husband are our community pillars in celebrating Kwanzaa. Every year, they place a grand Kinara with 7 candles representing the 7 principles of Kwanzaa and you can drive or walk by and be reminded of the beauty, power, and resilience of our people in this neighborhood. Instead, they, we, are now mourning the loss of someone special in our community when we should be celebrating and loving on one another as this terrible year comes to an end.

If you can, please share, boost, and donate when and what you can to support a small and grieving family in this tumultuous and painful time.  As an activist and organizer, I know clearly we are all we have so I am reminded of this quote from Gwendolyn Brooks and ask us to show up in this spirit, "We are each other's harvest. We are each other's business."

Ms. Afiah has consented to this GoFundMe page and has also provided her cashapp/paypal info you would like to support her and her family directly. $Afiah2020 or [email redacted] for Paypal.

Thank you all. This is the little bit I believe that will go a long way and help my neighbors through this difficult holiday season.
