Support for James and Jason’s Recovery

My name is Samantha, and I’m reaching out during an incredibly challenging time for my family. My dad, James Youngren, has been in Stony Brook Hospital for 24 days after months of not eating or drinking much. He was recently diagnosed with Wernicke’s encephalopathy, a severe vitamin B1 deficiency that has affected his ability to walk, his eye movement, and his mental state. The next step for him is to move to a rehabilitation facility so he can begin his recovery. James is a loving father and grandfather who enjoys rock and roll music, cheering for the Mets, and spending time with his cat Phoebe. He means the world to our family, especially his grandchildren, who adore him.

At the same time, my son Jason is also at Stony Brook Hospital. Jason has been struggling with severe muscle spasms since June, and his condition has worsened recently, requiring hospitalization. There is a psychological component to his illness, and he will need to go to a rehabilitation center in New Jersey. Jason is a caring and energetic young person who loves his pets, video games, and building Legos. He was a counselor in training at Kids Need More/Saddle Rock Day Camp this summer and is a Medford junior firefighter. I am so proud of him and want to make sure he gets the care he needs to recover.

Balancing care for both my dad and Jason has been overwhelming. I am their healthcare proxy and advocate, visiting both of them in the hospital, managing household bills that my dad usually handled, and caring for my other three children at home. The travel back and forth, the emotional toll, and the financial strain have made it difficult to keep up. I am asking for support to help cover travel costs, household bills, time off work, and medical expenses so I can focus on getting Jason and my dad the best support possible.
