For some of us, the term “a parent’s work is never done” has a whole different meaning than for others. Over the past seven months since Jacob was released from the hospital, his parents, Melissa and Josh, have also taken on the role of Nurse and Medical Caregiver. They are responsible for all of Jacob’s needs, including, but not limited to, administering his medications via a G-tube every two hours from 12 noon to midnight, and then at 4 a.m. and 8 a.m., giving him full nutrition and fluids via G-tube, providing daily speech and physical therapy, diapering, taking vital signs, and whatever other needs Jacob has – all things that he is unable to provide for himself. Caring for Jacob is a full-time job for both of his parents, in addition to being there for whatever needs their daughter Lilly has, maintaining their home, etc.

While they have been working very hard to obtain resources through the community, Department of Aging, and disability services, these processes take time. In the meantime, their ability to provide for their family financially continues to be a struggle. There is some relief in sight as Melissa has learned that she can become certified and paid to be Jacob’s caregiver in lieu of them paying a nurse to care for him 24/7. This process will take approximately six months to complete, but once it’s approved, it will be a huge assistance to the family.

As family and friends of Melissa and Josh, let’s help them as they navigate this rocky stretch in the road. While they’re doing all they can possibly do, and more, to carry this load on their own, a little extra help will go a long way towards easing their burdens.
