SUPPORT FOR GUILLO

On July 6, 2022, my dad, Guillermo Sanabria, suffered a stroke. He had a thrombectomy performed to remove the clot from his brain and was in the ICU for 4 days.

On July 14th, he was transferred to an acute rehabilitation facility where he received intense therapies that consisted of PT/OT/SLP = 3-4 hours of therapy per day x 6 days week.

On July 25th, my dad was happily discharged home with supervision. He was able to walk without an assistive device when in the home and language was slowly coming around. The plan was to start outpatient therapy the following week.

On August 1 however, he began experiencing right facial droop with the inability to raise his right arm, so he was rushed back to the ER. It was discovered he had a collapsed artery that was not providing enough blood flow to the brain (in the same area as the stroke from July). Once his full check up and tests were completed, the doctors decided to place a stent in the artery that was giving him the problem. This incident required that he relearn all of the skills he had regained and start over.

As of today, August 11, he is receiving several hours of intensive therapies in an acute rehabilitation center and making daily gains in restoring his overall function.

While this is all very positive progress and we are hopeful for a full recovery, the possibility exists that he could suffer another setback and have to start his rehabilitation from scratch. Further complicating matters is that health insurance will likely only cover 2-3 weeks of this care before he will be discharged home and a caregiver will have to be trained in providing some of the stimulation and exercises.

The first couple of weeks after a stroke is a critical time to start "retraining" the brain to do what it is supposed to do, so it is best that he receive as much supervised, medical intervention as possible in this timeframe.

I have created this Gofundme page in the hopes of raising enough money to cover day to day household expenses, so my family can focus 100% of their time and energy in helping my dad heal. He has required constant supervision from not only staff, but family members. This means that my mom has become a full-time caregiver and has been unable to work for the past 4 weeks and counting and there is no longer an income source with him also being sick. This has understandably created a huge financial strain and additional stress on my family.

El 6 de julio de 2022, mi papá, Guillermo Sanabria, sufrió un derrame cerebral. Se le realizó una trombectomía para extraer el coágulo de su cerebro y estuvo en la UCI durante 4 días.

El 14 de julio, fue trasladado a un centro de rehabilitación aguda donde recibió terapias intensas que consistieron en PT/OT/SLP = 3-4 horas de terapia por día x 6 días a la semana.

El 25 de julio, mi papá fue felizmente dado de alta a casa con supervisión. Pudo caminar sin un dispositivo de asistencia cuando estaba en el hogar y el lenguaje se estaba familiarizando lentamente. El plan era comenzar la terapia ambulatoria la semana siguiente.

Sin embargo, el 1 de agosto, comenzó a experimentar una caída del rostro derecho con la incapacidad de levantar el brazo derecho, por lo que lo llevaron de urgencia a la sala de emergencias. Se descubrió que tenía una arteria colapsada que no proporcionaba suficiente flujo de sangre al cerebro (en la misma área que el derrame cerebral de julio). Una vez que se completó su chequeo completo y las pruebas, los médicos decidieron colocar un stent en la arteria que le estaba causando el problema. Este incidente requirió que volviera a aprender todas las habilidades que había recuperado y comenzar de nuevo.

A partir de hoy, 11 de agosto, está recibiendo varias horas de terapias intensivas en un centro de rehabilitación aguda y logrando avances diarios en la restauración de su función general.

Si bien todo esto es un progreso muy positivo y tenemos la esperanza de una recuperación completa, existe la posibilidad de que sufra otro revés y tenga que comenzar su rehabilitación desde cero. Para complicar aún más las cosas, es probable que el seguro de salud solo cubra 2 o 3 semanas de esta atención antes de que lo den de alta y se deba capacitar a un cuidador para que proporcione algunos de los estímulos y ejercicios.

El primer par de semanas después de un accidente cerebrovascular es un momento crítico para comenzar a "reentrenar" al cerebro para que haga lo que se supone que debe hacer, por lo que es mejor que reciba la mayor cantidad posible de intervención médica supervisada en este período de tiempo.

Creé esta página de Gofundme con la esperanza de recaudar suficiente dinero para cubrir los gastos domésticos diarios, para que mi familia pueda dedicar el 100 % de su tiempo y energía a ayudar a mi papá a sanar. Ha requerido supervisión constante no solo del personal, sino también de miembros de la familia. Esto significa que mi mamá se ha convertido en una cuidadora de tiempo completo y no ha podido trabajar durante las últimas 4 semanas y contando y ya no hay una fuente de ingresos con él también enfermo. Es comprensible que esto haya creado una gran tensión financiera y un estrés adicional en mi familia.
