Evie's recovery from swallowing a Disc Battery

Donation protected
I am creating this in hopes to ease the sudden increasing financial strain the Kientz family is experiencing as they are caring for their sweet little girl Evangeline Kientz who swallowed a Disc battery. We know that like many of us they have a very high deductible.

Please read the tragic story I shared (in bold) written by Evie's mom, Kristin

I want to just try in a few words to tell you about Evie. She is 1.5 years old. The youngest daughter of Jason and Kristin Kientz and little sister of Adeline. If I had to try and describe Evie in just a few words, I would think of two things: The meaning of her first name; (Evangeline) means "good news" (which is one of the key reasons her Mom and Dad chose it.) And secondly, her middle name "Joy". This sweet child is the epitome of JOY.

The Kientz Family is so very special. Not only are they our dearest friends...even more so they are our family.

Please read this tragic accident that happened to sweet Evie. Please consider donating financially if you are able. Our goal is to eliminate any worry over financial burdens so they can direct all of their attention on the care of their sweet girl, Evie.

"In the midst of this trial, I feel a responsibility to share this so more tragedy can be averted. There NEEDS to be more awareness about this danger. My heart is breaking right now for the pain my child is in. But it is also breaking at the thought of how much worse it might have been and how many parents are not aware of the lethal danger in their homes hiding in such an inconspicuous place.
I bought a drawing pad on Amazon for my now four year old a year ago. I should have paid more attention to where it was manufactured and safety standards, but all I really noticed was the thousands of five star reviews and that it was an “Amazon’s Choice” item. I had no idea how dangerous this toy advertised for children 2 and up in its description was. It contained a nickel sized disc battery that was held in place only by a flimsy plastic cartridge.

Two nights ago the unthinkable happened. The toy dropped and in a matter of seconds the battery bounced out and was swallowed by my 1.5 year old.

We called the paramedics who came but after looking at vitals said she looked ok and we COULD take her to the hospital if we wanted to. They said we could also wait and call the doctor in the morning and it would likely pass in her stool. I shudder to think what would have happened if we had waited. I do not blame the paramedics. I blame the fact that there is not enough knowledge about this danger.

Batteries can lodge in the esophagus of a small child and burn through it causing irreparable or even fatal damage in as little as two hours. And that was what had begun inside our little girl. We were fortunate to be fast enough to get her the care she needed and an amazing pediatric surgeon retrieved the battery during a difficult and terrifying two hour procedure. However our baby suffered very painful burns to her esophagus. She is now unable to eat or drink and has to be fed through a feeding tube while being constantly monitored in a pediatric hospital. She has to wear stiff arm restraints so she cannot pull her tube out. It is truly a heartbreaking sight.

It is overwhelming to watch our child be in so much pain. Even worse to know it could have been prevented. I cannot believe a children’s toy had such a dangerous item completely unsecured and able to simply pop out when a child dropped it (as children are prone to do). Please be aware of what is in your home and the fact that made for children does NOT necessarily mean SAFE for children. These batteries are in MANY children’s toys. And share the knowledge that if this does happen it IS a critical medical emergency and time is of the essence. We were in time...My heart aches to think how many parents have these products in their homes and might not be.

Our baby is still not out of the woods as damage continues to occur after the battery is removed for five days causing sometimes severe complications. We deeply appreciate prayers for her as well as sharing this so that it never happens to any other family.

Please pray for this sweet family. Please help spread awareness about the dangers of  these coin sized lithium batteries.

Please share this with any one you know! Any amount helps!
