The whole world got turned upside down in a matter of days. We were supposed to be together at Kiawah, enjoying the salty air and our favorite family traditions. Instead, my brother Elim was rushed to the ICU and diagnosed with encephalitis, a serious condition that caused intense swelling in his brain. For over a week, he fought for his life in the hospital, and we faced the terrifying possibility of losing him. Thankfully, Elim pulled through, but his recovery will take months, possibly years, and he still needs ongoing medical care at home.
While Elim was in the hospital, our family home of nearly 20 years caught fire due to an electrical issue. My sister Isabella smelled smoke late at night and got everyone out safely, but the damage is severe. Now, my parents and younger siblings are staying with friends, unable to return home until repairs are complete. Elim is continuing his recovery in this temporary setting, with in-home care and regular treatments.
We are grateful for the support and kindness we’ve received from friends and our community. Every message and gesture has meant so much. If you’re able to help, your support will go directly toward Elim’s medical expenses and helping our family get back on their feet after the fire. Thank you for reading and for caring about our family during this difficult time.
