We are creating this fundraiser on behalf of Crisanta and Cristian; they are expecting a baby boy in July and we are raising funds with the intention of providing much needed financial support for rent, immigration-related legal fees, and other necessities.

On Wednesday, March 4th, Cristian was detained at his USCIS appointment. He has been in the country for several years and was in the process of seeking asylum when he received notice of an appointment through his application. Once he arrived at the immigration office in San Jose, CA he was detained and transported to an ICE detention facility in Bakersfield. Thanks to rapid response volunteers, Crisanta was able to get connected with an immigration attorney to assist with filing a habeas corpus petition and pursue this case to get Cristian back home to his family.

While we hope that Cristian will be released before the baby is born, there is legitimate concern that this won’t be the case. Crisanta is 6 months pregnant and there is a long road of court dates and legal processes ahead. Cristian’s absence has made her financial burden unmanageable even without legal fees - which will likely amount to over $15,000.

The legal fees and cost of living are a financial burden that Crisanta cannot bear alone. She works a demanding social work job while trying to navigate a challenging and complex legal system designed to keep people imprisoned; she can’t do this alone. Any amount you contribute will be important to keep Crisanta housed and fed, and in supporting her pay the attorneys needed to take on this complicated case.
