Recent Update: On August 31st at 8:55am my sister, Elmonesha Green took her last breath. Her fight against this terrible disease is now over and she is now at rest.
Sometimes help is the hardest thing to ask for. You battle and battle with your thoughts until you can’t anymore. This is my sister and this is her story!
It all began on June 26, 2021. She received news that would change her forever. On this day, my sister was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. This very aggressive cancer attacks her blood and her bone marrow. It causes her blood count and platelet levels to be abnormal. I have seen her battle with this very aggressive cancer for three years.
One day, as she was sitting in the hospital of our birthplace of New Orleans, Louisiana, we were told that she didn’t have long to live. Hospice was her only choice. My sister, being the person that she is did not take that for an answer and so, she traveled to MD Anderson. If you are unfamiliar with MD Anderson, it is a large hospital in Houston, Texas that focuses on cancer care patients and preventions.
This battle was one of the toughest battles I have ever seen anyone face. I watched my sister deteriorate from the inside out. She became unrecognizable, frail, fragile and tired. And for months she stayed there. She eventually regained her strength while continuing to suffer through many pokes, prods and testings. She finally, was able to go home.
Her motivation through all of this was and still is her five children. And although we know, sometimes it takes a village, my sister sometimes feels that she did it all alone.
Recently, on July 31, 2024, my sister underwent emergency surgery. This surgery, was to remove a tumor that had grown on her brain. The surgery lasted for five hours.
The surgery was only one of the many surgeries that I’ve seen my sister undergo over the last three years. I have seen my sister come out swinging every single time.
Within 3 days beginning on Wednesday, August 28th, my sister's conditions began to worsen. We received the news that all of her organs were beginning to die, her blood pressure was extremely low, and her heart was failing. We were told that we could either put her on life support or we could choose comfort care. Either choice would end in death.
I was able to ask my sister what she wanted. She told me that she did NOT want to be on life support, and though she was scared, I watched her come to terms with her life ending.
On the morning of her death, we received the call to make it to the hospital, as her life was coming to an end. I held my sister's head, prayed for her soul while she listened, and told her it was okay to rest. With the last strength she had, while tears fell from eyes, she held my hand and took her final breath.
My sister had cancer, cancer did not have her. God continues and will always continue to make a way!
Our family is in need of your help. Without any insurance, we are working hard to gather what is needed to ensure that she has the home going she deserves. If you could find it in your heart and you are able, I write this humbly asking for your help. It takes a village, and we can be that village. God bless you all!
Rest easy sister! You fought so hard and we are so proud of you!
