The Ktown Local of the Los Angeles Tenants Union (LATU) is raising emergency funds in support of disabled elders in our community–some experiencing severe health crises and some just trying to survive the onslaught of our inhumane healthcare system. As federal and state investment in public health and insurance programs like Medicaid and Medicare continues to decline, particularly for undocumented Angelinos, the urgency to care for each other’s health and well-being has only intensified. Decades of disinvestment, abandonment, and attacks on our communities from all sides has battered the health of poor and working class tenants in our city.

We aim to provide mutual aid support (financial and material) to elders in our communities that have been fighting alongside us for housing as a human right and struggling against all forms of displacement. These funds will allow us to keep our community members housed and allow them to age with dignity while they navigate our racist, ableist, and classist healthcare system. Funds will allow us to respond to the unique health crises people face and build towards a more humane and life-giving healthcare system, such as paying for home health nursing care and physical therapy, helping cover costs for cancer treatment, and reimbursing caregivers for materials (e.g. PPE, cleaning supplies).

We plan to use these funds first to support two elder tenant leaders, Nely and Raúl. Both have been engaged in long struggles against corporate slumlords trying to force them out of their homes, and have been sources of inspiration and strength in the fight against displacement.

Nely is a gardener, labor union organizer, and member of the Edgemont Tenants Association. She recently had a stroke that left her partially paralyzed and in need of regular care. Her friends and neighbors are showing up to support her, and this fundraiser will enable her to remain in her home and community while she recovers.

Raúl is a musician and one of the leaders of the fight against slumlord K3. He has cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. This fundraiser will allow him to pay his rent and take care of his health during this frightening time. We believe that no one should have to fear losing their housing during a health crisis–but that is the reality we live in. While we fight for a more just world, we must show up for our elders and support their healing.

All funds go directly to the Los Angeles Tenants Union and will be used at the discretion of our members to meet the most urgent needs as conditions continue to shift and intensify.

El Local de Ktown del Sindicato de Inquilinos de Los Ángeles (LATU) está recaudando fondos de emergencia para apoyar a los mayores con discapacidad de nuestra comunidad, algunos con graves crisis de salud y otros simplemente intentando sobrevivir al ataque de nuestro inhumano sistema sanitario. Planeamos utilizar estos fondos primero para apoyar a dos líderes de inquilinos mayores, Nely y Raúl. Ambos han estado involucrados en largas luchas contra los propietarios corporativos que intentan expulsarlos de sus hogares, y han sido fuentes de inspiración y fortaleza en la lucha contra el desplazamiento.

Nely es jardinera, organizadora sindical y miembra de la Asociación de Inquilinos de Edgemont. Recientemente sufrió un ictus que la dejó parcialmente paralizada y necesitando cuidados regulares. Sus amigos y vecinos están acudiendo para apoyarla, y esta recaudación le permitirá permanecer en su hogar y comunidad mientras se recupera.

Raúl es músico y uno de los líderes de la lucha contra el dueño K3. Tiene cáncer y actualmente está en quimioterapia. Esta recaudación le permitirá pagar el alquiler y cuidar de su salud durante este momento tan aterrador. Creemos que nadie debería temer perder su vivienda durante una crisis sanitaria, pero esa es la realidad en la que vivimos. Mientras luchamos por un mundo más justo, debemos estar presentes para nuestros mayores y apoyar su sanación.

Todos los fondos se destinan directamente al Sindicato de Inquilinos de Los Ángeles y se utilizarán a discreción de nuestros miembros para cubrir las necesidades más urgentes a medida que las condiciones sigan cambiando e intensificándose.
