Hangula School Charity Project
Solukhumbu District, Nepal (Lower Everest Region)
Project Overview
My name is Karma Sherpa. Having been brought up amidst the
beautiful landscapes of the Solukhumbu, I have immense pride and love towards the mountains and communities of the place I call home. Having grown up in the region and spent my life dedicated to sharing this beautiful land with people, I feel a strong sense of pride and desire to help those who live here.
Following my recent visit to Hangula Village, I would like to share with you an initiative aimed at improving access to quality education for children in one of Nepal’s most remote communities.
The Hangula community first invited me last year, and I am deeply grateful that I was finally able to visit in person a few days ago. This visit allowed me to better understand the challenges faced by the school, students, and families, and to assess their most urgent educational needs.
About Hangula Village
Hangula Village is located in the Solukhumbu District of Nepal, in the lower Everest region. The area is extremely remote and lies outside the main tourism routes. As a result, economic opportunities are very limited.
- Approximately 99% of the population belongs to the Rai ethnic group
- Most families rely on subsistence farming for survival
- Only around 15% of villagers work as porters during trekking seasons, which provides irregular and seasonal income
- Due to these conditions, many families struggle to meet even the most basic educational expenses for their children.
Current Situation of the School
The local school currently serves approximately 240 children. Despite the community’s strong commitment to education, many students are unable to attend school regularly because their families cannot afford essential items such as:
- School uniforms
- School bags
- Textbooks and stationery
In addition, the school has very limited access to modern learning resources, particularly computers and basic educational materials, which are essential for improving learning outcomes and digital literacy.
Project Needs
To support the students and strengthen the school’s learning environment, the project aims to provide the following:
- School uniforms for 240 children
- School bags for 240 children
- Stationery and textbooks for 240 children (for one academic year)
- 4 computers to support basic digital education and administrative needs
- Transportation and logistics, including a challenging 2-day jeep journey from Kathmandu to the village
Project Budget
Total Estimated Cost: USD 13,500
This budget includes:
- Educational supplies and materials
- School uniforms and bags
- Computers and related equipment
- Purchase, transportation, and delivery costs to this remote location
- Every effort will be made to ensure transparency and cost efficiency.
Transparency and Documentation
To ensure full transparency, I can provide:
- Photographs of the school, students, and village
- Updates on purchases and distribution of supplies
- Any additional information required to support the fundraising effort
