Support Eagle Scout Project for Sunshine Preserve

I am a Life Scout in Troop 55, an all-girls Scout troop. I am currently working toward earning my Eagle rank, the highest achievement in Scouting, and, to do so, I must plan, lead, and execute a service project. The service project I am working on is for the Arroyo & Foothills Conservancy, a non-profit organization that "[conserves] and [stewards] natural open space and [provides] free environmental education programs" (Arroyo & Foothills Conservancy). I am specifically working on the site of the Sunshine Preserve project, local to my neighborhood and right next to a popular hiking trailhead that is loved by my family.

The Sunshine Preserve strives to reintroduce biodiversity with indigenous plants that support native pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, as well as the local environment as a whole. While designated areas for protecting native plants are essential, the community's engagement and support create a greater impact. The Sunshine Preserve's pathways meander through a beautiful selection of indigenous plants, ultimately, to encourage visitors to appreciate the attractive foliage and integrate them into their home gardens.

The focus of my Eagle Project is to make achieving this goal easier for the Sunshine Preserve and our community by procuring, manufacturing, and installing 65 signs for over 55 plant species. The signs will include the common, scientific, and Tongva name (when available) for each plant. By implementing signage, the plants will be identified, and the preserve's intention will be made clear with the help of a sign that will provide visitors with an introduction to the site, as well as the preserve's website URL to access more information.
