ABOUT ME
My name is Holden Madagame, and I'm a queer, trans, indigenous artist living in Berlin, Germany. In the month of July I will be using Studio 16 at Uferstudios Berlin to research for my piece 'The Bear is Angry (A.T.)', which is a piece about ancestral knowledge, ancestral healing, and the experience of ancestral rage as an urban, queer, trans, indigenous person.

THE CONCEPT
The concept for developing this piece is to work with primarily other BIPOC people who have experienced this disconnect from their ancestral cultures due to genocide or other general trauma. This will be done through the voice, movement, dance, and the active collection of anger and generational trauma to provide the audience an insight into the experience of a non-idealized, non-fetishized indigenous story, resulting from culture death and loss of traditions, and social death.

The research involved in this piece would be both deeply personal and deeply communal. I would offer spaces for other indigenous and BIPOC people to share their narratives and workshop them through movement, voice, and drumming. Throughout this rehearsal process, I will be meeting with a small core group of participants to share stories, do ancestral healing work, do somatic rage practices, and most important to heal.

In addition to working with this core group, I would offer at no cost:
  • Rage sessions and workshops
  • 1-on-1 ancestral lineage healing sessions for BIPOC, queer, and trans people

The end result would be a presentation of this research at the end of July.

THE FINANCES
During this residency, I would like to provide a drum-making workshop at no cost to the participants, where they would keep their drums and use them as part of the rehearsal process.

This would involve coming together with animal hides and drum frames, building our drums together, and using them throughout the rehearsal process for our collective healing.

This would cost roughly 533,52€, which would include:
  • Animal hide and bands
  • Wood to make frames myself
  • Fees to the woodworking shop
  • Leather hole puncher
  • Sturdy scissors
  • Tubs for soaking hide
  • Textile material for beaters
