Support Dominic’s Homecoming
Imagine waking up tomorrow and having to start over. Completely over. Imagine not having a toothbrush, a t-shirt, a job, or a single dollar to your name. Now imagine having to start over during a global pandemic. Imagine competing in today’s job market with only a GED. That you earned in prison. Where you’ve been for the last 10+ years.
In 2009, at 18 years old, Dominic was arrested and spent a little over a year in the Harris County jail before being sentenced to 10 years in prison. He’ll be released in 10 days. And he’ll have no choice but to start completely over with every odd stacked against him.
A 2018 study done by the U.S. Department of Justice on state prisoner recidivism showed that almost 45% of former prisoners were arrested within one year of release, about 68% were arrested within three years, 79% within six years, and 83% in nine years.
Having a support system can help reduce the risk of recidivism! We, as a community, have the ability not just to help make sure that Dominic doesn’t become another statistic, but also to extend compassion at a time when it’s needed most. Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be putting together a care package to help ease Dominic’s transition back into the community. Any little bit you can give will go toward providing him with the most basic necessities. Any amount beyond that will be used to help him secure housing and employment. You don’t have to give a lot to make a difference.
