Help Fund Doctor Boyfriend's Sabbatical

Hi all,

Thanks for being here (whether you've already given/read/shared or you're new)! My name is Andrew Givens and I am currently on personal leave from UNC School of Medicine, working as a pediatric nursing assistant at UNC Children's Hospital, and navigating a messy divorce with several layers of abuse and legal involvement.

It was my intention to take the first half of 2025 to slow down—instead, I've spent much of the past month hospitalized and even incarcerated. I am behind on things like my utility bills, have been unable to finish registering my car, don't have a way to pay March rent, and need to continue to seek financial support during this challenging time. Once stabilized, my expenses are around $3K/month, so I am raising that x6 in efforts to give myself time to stabilize and continue to be the person, parent, and community member I want to be.

I often think of the phrase "there but for the grace of god go I," and over the past few months, I have continually been reminded (and at times dumbfounded) by the reality that ANY one of us could fall through the cracks of the oppressive systems that so many of us know so well and have committed our lives to dismantling.

Right now, it's me falling—jumping back out of the crack every chance I get because I fully, completely believe in the good. I believe in us. I believe in community. I don't think I deserve this, but I don't think any one else does either, and if it gets a little messy while we straighten that out, that's okay.

I've also found incredible strength, affirmation, and community in the past few months by being more honest, more silly, more brave, more direct about my own traumas, stories, and feelings, and want to continue to prioritize the coping mechanisms that I find most helpful (and the good news is, I think a whole lot of us are in it together)! Whether you need a buddy on a night when you're trying your damndest not to drink or you want a mom friend to smoke cigarettes with while our babies play together, I'd love to be your guy (and have some friends you're all gonna love).

I am still behind on my light bill and might not text you back right away, but can't wait to continue to grow stronger, funnier, and more ourselves in the days, weeks, months, and years to come. Who knows, maybe by the time my brother finishes med school, I could be a Dr. Glaucomflecken-esque commencement speaker. Sky's the limit, babies!
