My cousin and one of my closest friends, Dillon, is facing an incredibly difficult and dangerous situation. He lives in a tiny home in rural Hancock County, Maine, without basic plumbing or a kitchen. Dillon has mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) — a rare and serious condition that has recently worsened, causing severe allergic reactions, hives, nausea, and even life-threatening emergencies.

 Because of his illness, Dillon can’t work or hold a job. He has applied and reapplied for disability but has been denied each time. He has no reliable way to leave his home or attend medical appointments, and the cost of maintaining his health — from food to medication — has become impossible to manage alone. His diet and treatments are essential for survival, yet daily life is a constant struggle. On top of his health challenges, Dillon has endured devastating losses — his mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother have all passed away within the last three years — leaving him without family support.

 I didn’t tell Dillon about this fundraiser at first — he’s never wanted to ask for help or have anyone feel sorry for him.
